QuickBooks Desktop 2022 Bank Downloads After Discontinuation

When Intuit sunsets QuickBooks Desktop 2022, the built-in bank feeds (Direct Connect) eventually stop pulling transactions automatically. But losing live feeds does not mean you have to upgrade or migrate your company file. You can keep your accounts perfectly reconciled by importing your bank data manually. Here is how to keep transactions flowing into QuickBooks Desktop 2022 long after official services end.
Your Manual Import Options
When automatic feeds are no longer available, you have three reliable ways to bring transactions into QuickBooks Desktop. The process for all three is identical across most QuickBooks Desktop versions, so these steps apply to your 2022 installation just as they did to older editions.
- Web Connect (.QBO files): The most seamless manual method. Most major banks let you download a standard
.QBOfile from their online banking portal. QuickBooks natively reads this format and maps it directly to your bank feed screen for review. - CSV Conversion: If your bank only allows downloads as Excel or CSV files, you cannot import them directly into the standard bank feeds. You must use a third-party formatting tool to convert the CSV into a valid
.QBOor.IIFfile. - IIF Import: Intuit's proprietary interchange format. An
.IIFfile bypasses the bank feed review screen entirely and writes transactions directly into your register. It is highly efficient but requires strict formatting to avoid data mapping errors.
Importing a .QBO File (Web Connect)
This is the closest experience to your old automatic bank feeds.
- Log in to your bank or credit card's website and locate the transaction download section.
- Select the correct date range and choose the QuickBooks (.QBO) format. Save the file to your computer.
- Open QuickBooks Desktop 2022.
- Go to File, then Utilities, and select Import, followed by Web Connect Files.
- Browse to the
.QBOfile you saved and select Open. - QuickBooks will prompt you to match the file to the correct existing account in your chart of accounts. Select your account and continue.
- The transactions will populate in your Bank Feeds Center, where you can add or match them just as you did when the live connection was active.
Handling CSV and Excel Downloads
If your financial institution does not offer .QBO downloads, you will need to convert your bank's CSV or Excel files. QuickBooks Desktop 2022 does not have a native CSV-to-QBO converter built into its standard tools.
You will need a reliable conversion utility to reformat the raw spreadsheet data into a file QuickBooks recognizes. If you need to move data between formats or recover bank data from a problematic spreadsheet, you can use file conversion tools to translate standard CSVs into the IIF format QuickBooks requires.
Using IIF to Write Directly to the Register
For users who prefer to skip the Bank Feeds Center entirely, the .IIF format is a powerful alternative. When you import an .IIF file, QuickBooks processes the data and drops the transactions straight into the designated account register.
To import an .IIF file:
- Ensure your file is properly formatted with the correct account names and transaction types.
- In QuickBooks, go to File, then Utilities, and select Import, then IIF Files.
- Select your file and click Open.
- QuickBooks will display a confirmation once the data has been successfully written to your registers.
Because .IIF imports bypass QuickBooks' internal safety checks, always make a complete backup of your .qbw file before importing an .IIF file. If the formatting is off, the import can scramble your registers, and you will need to restore that backup.
A Reliable Monthly Routine
To keep your Desktop 2022 file accurate without live feeds, establish a strict monthly schedule:
- Pick a recurring date: Choose a day a few days after your bank statement closes (e.g., the 3rd of every month).
- Download your files: Log into all your banking and credit card portals and download the previous month's transactions as
.QBOfiles. - Back up locally: Before importing anything, create a local backup of your company file (
File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup). - Import and review: Import your
.QBOfiles through the Web Connect feature and spend time matching or adding the transactions in the Bank Feeds Center. - Reconcile: Once the feed is cleared, run your standard reconciliation (
Banking > Reconcile) against the official bank statement to ensure every dollar is accounted for.
By replacing automatic Direct Connect with a disciplined manual import workflow, your QuickBooks Desktop 2022 installation remains fully capable of managing your finances indefinitely.
