If your organization relies on QuickBooks Desktop 2018, moving the software to a new computer after Intuit's May 31, 2021 service discontinuation requires a proactive approach. Because the software is sunset, you cannot rely on Intuit's automated background services or live support to fetch your original license details. Here is how to safely reinstall, reactivate, and insure your 2018 installation so you can keep your books running offline indefinitely.

Archive Your 2018 Essentials Now

Before your current hard drive fails, locate and preserve three critical items. If you wait until you are staring at a blank new PC, it will be too late to recover this data easily:

1. The Installer File: If you originally downloaded 2018, find the QuickBooks_2018.exe setup file. If you only have installation discs, use an external USB optical drive or copy the disc contents to a flash drive.
2. License and Product Numbers: You need the 20-digit license number and the 7-digit product number. In your current QuickBooks 2018, press F2 (or Ctrl+1) to open the Product Information window. Take a screenshot or write these numbers down and store them securely.
3. Company File Backups: Always keep a recent .qbb backup on separate external media.

Reinstalling on a New PC

The installation process for QuickBooks Desktop 2018 is identical across the QuickBooks family. Run your saved installer file as an Administrator. When prompted, enter the product and license numbers you archived earlier.

During setup, select the option for a custom or network install if you need to host the company file for other users. Once the installation finishes, do not allow the program to search for automatic updates. Getting Past Activation
