QuickBooks Desktop 2016 officially reached the end of its supported lifecycle on May 31, 2019. At this point, live technical support, payroll updates, and banking services were discontinued for the version. If you are still successfully running QuickBooks 2016 to manage your historical or offline books, allowing the software to fetch and apply updates can be risky. An unexpected background update can alter file structures, trigger new compatibility requirements, or break your carefully maintained setup. Here is how to lock your 2016 installation down so the software never changes unexpectedly.

Disable Updates Inside QuickBooks 2016

The first line of defense is turning off the automatic update feature inside the application itself. This step is identical across practically all recent QuickBooks Desktop versions:

1. Open QuickBooks Desktop 2016 and go to the Help menu.
2. Select Update QuickBooks Desktop (or Update QuickBooks).
3. Navigate to the Update Now tab if it is not already active.
4. Click the Options tab.
5. In the Automatic Update section, select No for the option to automatically download and install updates.
6. Uncheck the box for Automatically download and install updates in the future.
7. Click Save and close the window.

Block the QuickBooks Updater Services

2. Type services.msc and press Enter.
3. Locate any services named QuickBooks Update Agent or Intuit Update Service (the exact naming convention may vary slightly, but will include "QuickBooks" or "Intuit" and "Update").
4. Right-click the service and select Properties.
5. Change the Startup type to Disabled.
6. If the Service status says "Running," click the Stop button.
7. Click Apply and OK.

Repeat this process for any other related Intuit background services you find in the list.

Lock Down the Update Folders

As a final layer of protection, you can restrict Windows from writing new update files to the hard drive. QuickBooks typically downloads its patch files to specific temporary folders before applying them. By revoking write permissions, you render the updater completely inert.

1. Close QuickBooks Desktop 2016 completely.
2. Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2016\Components.
3. Look for a folder named Download or Updates (you may need to enable "Hidden items" in the View tab to see the ProgramData directory).
4. Right-click the folder and select Properties.
5. Go to the Security tab and click Edit.
6. In the list of groups or users, select SYSTEM and Administrators.
7. In the permissions box below, check the box under the Deny column for Write.
8. Click Apply and OK.
