When QuickBooks Desktop tries to download an update or payroll tax table and fails, you may see Error 15311. This is a digital certificate verification failure. It means the software is refusing to install the downloaded update because it cannot cryptographically confirm that the file came from Intuit and is safe to run.
Understanding why this happens—and how to stop it permanently—is critical if you are running an older, unsupported version of QuickBooks Desktop.
The 15xxx Update Error Family
Error 15311 belongs to the 15xxx family of update errors. If you are seeing a nearby code (like 15101, 15215, or 15271), the underlying problem is essentially the same: QuickBooks is trying to update, but the process is breaking down.
These errors typically point to either a conflict with your computer's security software blocking the download, or a breakdown in the digital signature verification. On older versions, it almost always means the update simply cannot be validated anymore.
Why It Happens on Discontinued Versions
If you are running QuickBooks Desktop past Intuit's official discontinuation date, Error 15311 is a sign of a fundamental mismatch. Intuit issues digital certificates that "expire" after a certain date. When your older version of QuickBooks reaches out for an update, the server either provides a file with a newer certificate your software doesn't recognize, or the update pathway has been shut down entirely.

When the Company File Is Damaged
