QuickBooks Error 15106 -- Update Program Locked or Blocked

QuickBooks Error 15106 stops payroll and maintenance updates when the updater service lacks permissions or antivirus quarantines the file; here is how to clear it.

When QuickBooks Desktop downloads a payroll update or a maintenance release, it relies on a background helper program called the QuickBooks Update Agent. Error 15106 appears when that helper cannot launch or cannot replace its own files during the update cycle. The update halts before any changes are written, leaving the program at its previous version.

What the Error Message Says

The full alert displayed by the QuickBooks Update Agent is:

The update program is damaged, or QuickBooks is unable to launch the update program. Error code: 15106.

In some installations the message is shortened to:

Error 15106: The QuickBooks update program is damaged.

Both wordings point to the same root condition.

What the Code Means

Error 15106 is a Windows-level failure, not a data-file problem. The Update Agent executable — QBUpdate.exe — is either blocked from running by a security product, prevented from launching by insufficient Windows permissions, or locked by another process that has a handle on the file. QuickBooks interprets any of those conditions as a damaged updater and surfaces the 15106 code.

What Triggers It

Our engineers see three trigger scenarios, listed from most to least common:

  1. Antivirus or anti-malware quarantine. Security software flags QBUpdate.exe or the downloaded patch file as suspicious and moves it to quarantine or silently blocks execution.
  2. Insufficient Windows permissions. The signed-in Windows user does not have local administrator rights, so the Update Agent cannot write to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks\QBUpdate.
  3. Stuck file lock. A previous update attempt crashed or was cancelled mid-write, leaving QBUpdate.exe locked by a orphaned process or by the QuickBooks Database Server Manager.

How to Fix It

Scenario 1 — Antivirus or Anti-Malware Quarantine

  1. Open your antivirus or anti-malware console and check the quarantine or blocked-items log.
  2. If QBUpdate.exe or a file matching QB[version]Update.exe appears, restore it and mark it as an exclusion.
  3. Add the following paths to the antivirus exclusion list:
    • C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks [year]
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit
    • C:\ProgramData\Intuit
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. In QuickBooks, choose Help ▸ Update QuickBooks Desktop ▸ Update Now ▸ Get Updates.

Scenario 2 — Insufficient Windows Permissions

  1. Sign in to Windows with an account that has local administrator rights.
  2. Close QuickBooks.
  3. Right-click the QuickBooks desktop shortcut and choose Run as administrator.
  4. Go to Help ▸ Update QuickBooks Desktop ▸ Update Now ▸ Get Updates.
  5. When the update completes, close QuickBooks and reopen it normally to confirm the new version in the Product Information window (F2 or Ctrl+1).

Scenario 3 — Stuck File Lock

  1. Close QuickBooks on every workstation.
  2. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) and end any of these processes if present: QBUpdate.exe, QBW32.exe, QBCFMonitorService.exe, IntuitUpdateService.exe.
  3. Open Services (services.msc), stop QuickBooksDB[year] and QuickBooks Update Agent Service, then restart them.
  4. Reboot the computer.
  5. Relaunch QuickBooks and run the update again.

If none of the three scenarios clears the error, download and run the QuickBooks Tool Hub, select Installation Issues, and run Quick Fix my Program. That utility resets the Update Agent service registration and clears orphaned locks without touching company data.

How to Prevent It Recurring

  • Keep the QuickBooks installation folder and the C:\ProgramData\Intuit path in your antivirus exclusion list permanently.
  • Make sure every user who installs updates signs in to Windows with local administrator rights.
  • Avoid force-closing QuickBooks while an update is in progress; if the Update Agent window appears frozen, wait at least five minutes before ending the process.
  • Run the QuickBooks Tool Hub's Quick Fix my Program once a quarter on machines that frequently apply payroll updates.
