QuickBooks Error 15103 -- Update Program Damaged During Payroll or QuickBooks Update
Error 15103 stops QuickBooks or payroll updates when the update program is damaged; our engineers walk through resolving it and getting updates installed.
QuickBooks Error 15103 appears when the desktop product or its payroll service tries to download and apply an update but cannot complete the process because the update program itself has become damaged. The error halts the update mid-stream, leaving the installation in an inconsistent state. Our engineers have resolved this error across single-user and multi-user environments, and in most cases the fix is straightforward once the underlying trigger is identified.
What the Error Message Says
The full message typically reads:
Error 15103: The update program is damaged, or the update program cannot be opened. QuickBooks Update Error.
In some installations the wording varies slightly, but the error code 15103 and the reference to a damaged update program are consistent.
What the Code Means
Error 15103 indicates that the QuickBooks update engine — the component responsible for downloading, verifying, and applying patches — has encountered a file it cannot read, execute, or replace. The update program files live in the C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks directory structure, and when one or more of those files are corrupted, missing, or locked by another process, the update aborts with this code.
What Triggers It
Our engineers see Error 15103 most often in these scenarios:
- A previous update was interrupted — a power loss, forced shutdown, or network drop during a prior update leaves partial or corrupted update files behind.
- Antivirus or security software quarantined update components — real-time scanning flags QuickBooks update executables as suspicious and removes or locks them.
- The QuickBooks Download folder is corrupted — the
C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks\Components\Downloaddirectory contains damaged.exeor.qbpfiles. - Incorrect Internet Explorer security settings — QuickBooks relies on Windows internet settings for downloads, and overly restrictive zones block the update.
- User Account Control or folder permissions block the update engine — the signed-in Windows user lacks sufficient rights to write to the ProgramData folder.
How to Fix It
Fix 1: Run QuickBooks as Administrator
The most common resolution. Right-click the QuickBooks desktop shortcut and select Run as administrator, then attempt the update again from Help > Update QuickBooks Desktop > Update Now. If the update completes, the problem was a permissions conflict.
Fix 2: Clear the QuickBooks Download Folder
- Close QuickBooks.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to
C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks\Components\Download. - If the
Downloadfolder does not exist, look underC:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks <year>\Components\Download. - Select all files inside the
Downloadfolder and delete them. - Reopen QuickBooks and run the update again. The update engine will recreate the files from scratch.
Fix 3: Configure Antivirus and Security Software
- Open your antivirus or endpoint security application.
- Add the following folders to the exclusion or allow list:
C:\ProgramData\IntuitC:\Program Files\Intuit
- Verify that no QuickBooks executables — particularly
QBUpdate.exe,IntuitSyncManager.exe, andQBW32.exe— appear in the quarantine history. If they do, restore them. - Reboot the computer and retry the update.
Fix 4: Adjust Windows Internet Options
- Press Windows + R, type
inetcpl.cpl, and press Enter. - Select the Security tab.
- Click Trusted Sites, then Sites.
- Uncheck Require server verification (https:).
- Add
*.quickbooks.comand*.intuit.comto the trusted sites list. - Click Close, then OK.
- Select the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and confirm that Use TLS 1.2 is checked. Disable TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 if enabled.
- Restart QuickBooks and run the update.
Fix 5: Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool
- Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub from Intuit's public download page.
- Open the Tool Hub and select Installation Issues.
- Click QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool and allow it to run — this typically takes several minutes.
- Restart the computer when the tool finishes.
- Open QuickBooks and attempt the update.
Fix 6: Repair the QuickBooks Installation
- Close all running programs.
- Open Control Panel > Programs and Features (or Apps & Features in Windows 10/11).
- Locate QuickBooks in the program list, select it, and click Change/Uninstall.
- In the QuickBooks maintenance wizard, select Repair and follow the prompts.
- Restart the computer after the repair finishes.
- Run the update.
How to Prevent It Recurring
Our engineers recommend keeping the QuickBooks Tool Hub installed so the diagnostic tools are available immediately if an update fails again. Configure antivirus exclusions for the Intuit program directories before the next update cycle — this prevents real-time scanning from removing update components mid-download. Always run QuickBooks as an administrator when applying updates, and avoid force-closing QuickBooks or powering off the workstation while an update is in progress. If updates are applied across a network in a multi-user setup, verify that the server hosting the company file has the same folder exclusions and that the QuickBooks Database Server Manager service is running before starting the update.
