Fix QuickBooks Desktop Error -6150, -1006: Company File Repair
QuickBooks error -6150, -1006 means your company file is damaged or unreachable. Here is how to diagnose and fix it to keep your Desktop data accessible.
When you try to open your company file in QuickBooks Desktop and the software throws error -6150, -1006, it usually means the program cannot read the file itself. The file may be corrupted, or QuickBooks is being blocked from reaching it by a network or configuration issue. Fortunately, you can resolve this without upgrading or replacing your software.
Understanding the -6000 Error Family
Error -6150, -1006 belongs to the broader -6000 series of QuickBooks errors. This family of codes covers a range of company file problems. If you see a different code starting with -6000 (such as -6000, -77, -80, or -82), the underlying cause is generally the same: QuickBooks is struggling to open, read, or communicate with your .qbw file. The troubleshooting steps for -6150, -1006 apply to most of this family.
Common Causes
Before making changes, it helps to know why this happens. The most frequent culprits are:
- Company file corruption: The
.qbwfile itself has structural damage. - Network data file issues: The
.ND(Network Data) file QuickBooks uses to locate the database is damaged or stuck. - Incomplete updates: A background update was interrupted, leaving the database manager out of sync.
- Storage environment issues: You are trying to open a file directly from a cloud sync folder (like OneDrive or Dropbox) or a USB drive.
How to Fix Error -6150, -1006
Follow these steps in order. They are designed to work entirely offline and on discontinued versions of QuickBooks Desktop.
1. Test with a Local Copy
First, determine if the problem is your file or your network.
- Create a new folder directly on your Desktop.
- Locate your company file (
.qbw). If you are on a network, navigate to the server where it lives. - Copy the
.qbwfile and paste it into the new folder on your Desktop. - Open QuickBooks while holding down the
Ctrlkey (this opens the application without loading a company file). - Go to File > Open or Restore Company, and open the file from your local Desktop folder.
If the file opens successfully, the original file is fine. Your issue is a damaged network configuration file or database server. If it still shows -6150, -1006, skip to step 4.
2. Rename the .ND and .TLG Files
QuickBooks generates .ND (Network Data) and .TLG (Transaction Log) files to manage database connections and backups. If these become corrupted, QuickBooks will fail to open the company file. Renaming them forces QuickBooks to build fresh ones.
- Go to the folder containing your original company file.
- You will see files with the exact same name as your company file but ending in
.NDand.TLG. - Right-click the
.NDfile and select Rename. Add.OLDto the end of the name (e.g.,CompanyFile.qbw.nd.OLD). - Do the exact same thing for the
.TLGfile. - Try to open your company file normally again.
Note: Never rename the .qbw file itself, as this can break your data links.
3. Rescan with Database Server Manager
If the local copy opened fine but the file still will not open over your network, the server needs to re-recognize the file.
- On the computer hosting your company file, open the Windows Start menu.
- Search for and open QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
- Go to the Folder tab and click Browse.
- Select the folder that contains your company file and click OK.
- Click Start Scan. This process forces QuickBooks to configure the network permissions correctly for your file.
4. Run Verify and Rebuild Data Utilities
If the file refuses to open even from your local Desktop, the company file itself is likely damaged. QuickBooks has built-in repair tools.
- Hold
Ctrland double-click your QuickBooks icon to open it without a company file. - Click Open or Restore Company and navigate to your file. If QuickBooks prompts you to ignore the error and open anyway, do so.
- Once open (if possible), go to the Window menu and select Close All.
- Go to File > Utilities > Verify Data.
- If QuickBooks detects a problem, it will prompt you to run Rebuild Data. Click Rebuild Now.
- QuickBooks will ask to back up your file first—allow it to do so.
- Once the Rebuild utility finishes, run Verify Data one more time to ensure the damage is resolved.
When the File is Severely Damaged
If the Rebuild utility fails, freezes, or reports that it cannot fix the file, your company file is heavily corrupted. At this stage, restoring from a recent local backup is your best immediate option. If you do not have a clean backup, the file requires advanced structural repair. Preventing Future -6000 Errors
To keep your long-term Desktop installation healthy, avoid storing your active company file in cloud-synced folders (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox). These applications constantly lock and unlock files for uploading, which shreds QuickBooks database connections. Keep your file on a local hard drive or a dedicated local server, and always maintain a rolling backup saved to a separate physical drive.
